Audi is allegedly working on an S3 Plus model to fill the gap between the S3 and the upcoming range-topping RS3.
The Audi S3 is currently the top dog in the A3 lineup with a 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter TFSI engine delivering 296 bhp (220 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm). Pretty soon it will be dethroned by the RS3 which will have an evolution of the 5-cylinder 2.5-liter Euro 6-compliant engine. It seems between these two models there will be an S3 Plus powered by an upgraded EA888 engine.
With this unit Audi wants to create the most powerful 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine in the world so it will allegedly have more oomph than Mercedes-Benz's unit which powers the AMG versions of the A-Class lineup. The AMG motor delivers 355 bhp (265 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) while Audi's unit is said to output somewhere in the region of 375 bhp (280 kW) and almost 500 Nm (369 lb-ft).
The same report mentions Audi plans on introducing the S3 Plus in 2015 but the model could be revealed before the end of this year. Expect the same engine to power hotter versions (RS most likely) of the third-gen Audi TT (both coupe and convertible).
Taking into account the S3 Plus is rumored to have 375 bhp we can imagine the RS3 will go well beyond the 400 bhp (298 kW) mark to justify the added price tag and the flagship position. The RS3 will reportedly be unveiled this spring so look for a Geneva Motor Show launch this March.

Si piazza a ridosso della RS3, che SPERO abbia almeno 400+ (anche qua, dolori immani in termini di ladrata superbollo)

Da qui, visto che la S3 non differisce poi molto da una S-Line ben carrozzata, non la prenderei nemmeno in considerazione, tanto vale spendere certe cifre ma avere una vettura comunque di un segmento superiore...

Anche secondo me questa S3 plus è una mezza bufala sinceramente..
in primis, perchè audi non ha mai fatto versioni plus delle S, ma solo delle RS!
si, il TTRS plus è un prodotto un po' assurdo.. +20 cv credo non facciano la differenza per nessuno, a quei livelli di potenza.

Se teniamo conto del fatto che sulla A1 concept il 2.5 l'han portato a 500cv senza problemi... sta solo a loro decidere a quanti cv far arrivare l'RS3 8VA...

Comunque, anche se mi dispiace dirlo, il nostro mercato non viene minimamente valutato e quindi figuriamoci se stanno a pensare a noi...

Parlando come se non esistessero bolli e altre rapine, devo dire che dovranno esser bravi a metterla fuori al prezzo giusto e soprattutto differenziare parecchio come cavalleria l'RS. Non so, a parità di cv, chi possa preferire il 2.0 come erogazione rispetto al 2.5 ...

anche io ci avevo pensato, il gap di potenza rispecchierebbe le attuali versioni. però a me sta notizia della plus 375 mi sa tanto di bufala.

It would seem that Audi hasn’t taken kindly to the gauntlet thrown down out of Stuttgart when Mercedes-Benz nabbed the bragging right of world’s most powerful production 4-cylinder with its 355 hp 2.0-liter turbo fitted in the CLA AMG. And, it would appear, Audi plans an answer to this call with a rumored 375 hp version of its EA888 2.0 TFSI to be fitted to what insiders are calling the “S3 plus”.

Sources inside Volkswagen have revealed that the engine has already out-performed the Mercedes engine on the test bench and it should be revealed by September this year… just in time for the Paris Motor Show. There were even thoughts of revealing the new engine to the most ardent enthusiasts of Audi and Volkswagen at this summer’s Worthersee event, though whether it makes it to the June event remains to be seen. Even still, actual production units fitted to cars including an S3 plus are expected in the latter half of 2015.

According to a report on Motoring.com.au:

Sources also say the new motor is based around Volkswagen’s existing 2.0-litre, four-cylinder block, crankcase, conrods and crankshaft, but has developed its power by a trick new cylinder head and a large-capacity turbocharger. It is said to develop closer to 500Nm (369 ft-lbs.) of torque as well, and will be mated to an all-wheel drive system and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission capable of managing all of the engine’s torque from first gear. AMG limits the engine’s torque delivery in the first three gears of the A 45, CLA 45 and GLA 45 because of gearbox limitations.

Also interesting, the Volkswagen Group hired away Friedrich Eichler, the Mercedes engineer who spearheaded development of the CLA 45 engine. Eichler is said to be leading development on this new 2.0 TFSI that will knock his former creation from its perch.

Just how the engine positions itself with the Audi 2.5 TFSI used in the TT RS and RS Q3 remains to be seen. Certainly its power will be nearly the same as the current-generation 2.5 TFSI and the 2.0 TFSI is quite lighter and more compact, lending itself to better handling dynamics and theoretically even fitment into smaller cars like the recently-announced Audi S1.

Sources of Motoring.com.au insist Audi isn’t worried about the space between the standard S3′s 2.0 TFSI and the upcoming RS 3/TT RS mill. According to the site, the new 2.5 TFSI will be Euro VI-compliant and will “leave room” above the engine in the S3 plus.

Even still, the next question is what happens up stream. Rumors suggest the S3 plus will be in the four second range from 0-62 mph. The TT RS with the old version of the 2.5 TFSI was already needing only 4.2 to hit 0-62 mph, this will put even more pressure on models like the Audi R8.

A more recent report from Motoring.com.au, the Australian automotive news website that’s been leading this story, is that Audi will be first to offer this potent new 2.0 TFSI as fitted in an “S3 plus” and that the model will be shown by year’s end. The engine is also slated for some version of the TT and also a version of the Volkswagen Scirocco.

So What Do We Think?
This intel is based on several stories that came from Motoring.com.au. Given a long track record of super competitive thinking that we’ve come to expect from the Volkswagen Group and also the level of detail provided in the stories, we’re inclined to believe what we’re reading.

Our own render above of an S3 plus is likely not accurate. We made a quick adjustment to the current S3, adding black optics akin to what we’ve seen on other Audi models as well as the color-matched rotor wheels from the TT RS plus. It’s possible that the S3 plus could follow this sort of design route but it is also likely that the front of the S3 plus will need some re-designing in order to better account for the additional cooling required by the new engine. Also, that the S3 plus will even be sold in sedan form has not been suggested, though we’re making that assumption. We also don’t know whether or not this engine will come to the USA, though the CLA 45 is sold in the America so perhaps Audi will make a point of directly competing with its rival Mercedes in this market.

We’ll be traveling to Geneva, Switzerland for the Geneva Motor Show next week and are expecting to have some access to the highest level Audi executives at that time. We’ll do our best to try to confirm or even expand the intel centering around this new 375 hp 2.0 TFSI.
