The all-new A8 and updated Q7 won't be the only vehicles in Audi's line-up to benefit from the automaker's new eight-speed gearbox. According to dealer order guides released for the 2011 model year, the octo-cog-swapper is set to proliferate throughout the Audi line-up in the next year, with the automaker aiming for around 70% of it U.S. sales volume to come equipped with the new gearbox.

For the 2011 model year, the A4 2.0 TFSI quattro sedan and Avant will come packing the eight-speed tranny, along with the A5 2.0 TFSI quattro coupe and cabriolet (the manual six-speed will only be available on the coupe). In addition, the revised Q7, with its new high- and low-output 3.0-liter supercharged V6s (cribbed from the S4 and A6), will replace the 3.6-liter V6 and 4.2-liter V8 for the 2011 model year. Both engines, along with the new 3.0-liter TDI, will come equipped with the eight-speed auto.

Finally, Audi quietly revealed the 2.0 TFSI inline-four-equipped Q5 at the New York Auto Show, and part of the new package will also include the eight-speed 'box.

Sales of the eight-speed automatic-equipped models will begin this fall, each delivering improved fuel economy, quicker downshifts and, thanks to its compact packaging, no additional weight gain over the standard six-speed tiptronic.

dovrebbe sì ridurre i consumi

After debuting in the Audi A8, the eight-speed tiptronic has recently become part of the Q7. The all-new torque-converter transmission’s greatest asset is its high overall gear ratio – the spread is 7.25 : 1 between the lowest ratio in first gear and the highest in top gear. The Q7 accelerates dynamically and cruises in the top two speeds at low, fuel-sipping revs.

The new transmission considerably reduces fuel consumption compared to the previous model’s six-speed tiptronic. Its eight speeds minimize jumps in engine speed between gears, and the engine always runs near its ideal operating point. Shifting is smooth and practically imperceptible, as well as being spontaneous, speedy and supple.

The tiptronic’s eight speeds were realized by means of an additional shifting element. Although the extension housing is consequently slightly larger, the new torque converters are more narrow – allowing for a transmission which is altogether shorter. These measures reduced the weight by as much as 11 kg (24.25 lb).

All of the eight-speed tiptronic’s components have been rendered more efficient. For example, a smaller oil pump is utilized in conjunction with an optimized flow of oil in the transmission. An additional efficiency enhancement: the clutches now contain fewer friction plates. Many more individual measures were implemented to ultimately reduce drag losses considerably. Furthermore, the transmission oil is now heated when the Q7 is cold-started. Once the engine has heated enough coolant, a valve in the loop opens and the hot water flows on to the transmission-oil cooler – in turn decreasing friction losses due to cold oil.

A torque converter lockup clutch also plays an important role in this efficiency ensemble. It is closed during normal driving, connecting the transmission directly to the engine to boost efficiency. The integration of a wide-angle torsional damper with an enlarged effective range enabled the shifting to lower revs of the range within which the torque converter lockup clutch can remain closed while driving.

While the vehicle comes to a stop – even if it is still in D mode – a clutch is opened to disconnect the engine from the transmission. The same clutch then reengages when the driver removes their foot from the brake pedal.

Slightly different versions of the eight-speed tiptronic are available, depending on the engine. In conjunction with the 3.0 TDI, a small, electrically operated oil pump in the tiptronic ensures start-stop functionality. When the vehicle resumes travel, this pump forces oil into the shifting elements required for driving off. The transmission is ready for operation very quickly.

The Dynamic Shift Program (DSP) uses a new and fast processor. In D mode, the DSP favors higher gears and lower revs to boost efficiency; in the sporty S mode, it stays in gears longer during acceleration for higher engine speeds.

The selector lever on the center tunnel is used to choose the driving modes (P, R, N, D and S) and to shift manually. Gears can also be manually shifted via the optional paddles on the steering wheel.
